Meta Tags and Keywords

It’s not uncommon at all that clients request that I bombard their header section with a ton of meta keywords. Not long ago, the meta keywords attribute played a huge role in SEO, but these days, that’s far from the truth. Google is on the record saying that they no longer pay attention to meta keywords tag, thus making the keyword stuffing officialy outdated. This method was phased out mainly because of the abuse it underwent by people stuffing in irreverent or misleading keywords to lure unsuspected web surfers to their pages.

This also applies to general keyword stuffing around pages. Years ago if you loaded up a page with tons of keywords, that would hep you in the area of SEO greatly. People used to often (And actually still do) hide text by changing the color so it blended into the background color of the site, and then just load it up with keywords. It used to be a great way to trick the search engines, but today not only is it annoying, it doesn’t work. Since the era of keyword stuffing search engine’s algorithms have become much more complex.

Let’s be honest, if you care about SEO and you care about your visitors, stop loading up pages with keywords and focus more on accurate content.

Spamming

Got Spam? I bet you do. It’s far from rare that we see robots and malicious web users aggressively placing their links in comment forms around the web. If you’re a blog owner chances are you know exactly what we’re talking about. Not only does this tactic not work, it’s very annoying… So please just STOP. Any way, Google has addressed this issue by assigning the “nofollow” link tag to blog comment links. That greatly devalues the links within blog comment areas.

Submitting Your Site

Search engine submission is not necessary. Google will find you. In fact, Google’s ability to search out new sites is so advanced there’s really nothing needed on your part to get found. If you’re compelled to do something, getting inbound links will help the process and is much more effective than submitting your site. Try it out; toss a link on Facebook or Twitter.

Long Island is split into two counties, Nassau and Suffolk – each police department pays a lot of money to their officers, but Suffolk is the highest paid in the nation (to my knowledge) making over $108,000 / yr at top pay. The test only comes around once every four years, so I’m glad I remembered to sign up for this round. Test is in June 2011. Any way – I’m psyched to take the test… let’s hope I score as high on this as I did on West Chester County’s test.

The downtown area of Chicago was a lot of fun. We pulled the “tourist card” and used Trip Advisor to pinpoint some legendary eateries and cool “to-do’s.” WordCamp Chicago was nearly double the size of the last WordCamp I attended. I learned a lot and had a real fun time doing so. There were some stellar speakers highlighted at the event who were eager to share their knowledge, which was gratefully received by the audience.

I had a lot of fun being a tourist. It was more of a food-tour than anything, since really all I did was eat. Of course, being the typical firefighter, I just had to check out some local firehouses. Check out some pics below!

Had a great time in WordCamp Raleigh – met a lot of interesting people and learned a new trick or two when it comes to some WordPress development. A few interesting points that I noticed:

There were many users, maybe even more than developers (or at least what I would consider a “developer”)

Those users were not all young, technologically inclined individuals

There is a very, very strong and connected WordPress community

There are many things to look forward to in some of the future releases of WordPress (didn’t hear that for the first time, but figured I’d throw it in)

Rackspace Cloud not only has good hosting but provides excellent cloud-shaped cookies

As if booking a trip to WordCamp Raleigh wasn’t enough, I’ll be heading down to Chicago for WordCamp Chicago June 5th & 6th. I plan on making a little vacation out of it, so I’ll be down there a day or two earlier and leave a day or two later. It’s a busy city and there’s a lot I’d like to see!

Word to the wise – If you’re going, book a hotel as soon as you can. It took me a few hours on the phone to find anything closer than 20 miles to the venue. I eventually booked my stay with the City Suites Hotel which is approximately 4.5 miles from the venue… I’ll be trying hard to get a closer hotel, but due to a very large medical convention, it won’t be easy… There are a few hotels that are closer (within walking distance) that are available, but rates start upwards of $450+ / night… that’s a bit out of my price range…
